The Belize dollar is pegged at 2 BZD = 1 USD and this dollar peg is the reason for the macroeconomic stability of the Belize country. To maintain the BZD1-USD2 peg, the Bank has to ensure external assets of 40% (or above) of its domestic liabilities and manage credit growth so that imports do not put an unnecessary pressure on official reserves. In 2013 Belize restructured its massive sovereign debt known as 'Superbonds'. This restructuring gave it a temporary relief that would affect interest rates to rise post August 2017. A huge debate surrounding the Belize are using funds to invest in infrastructure instead of paying back debts. For example, Belize gets its fuel from Venezuela and pays only 50% of the fuel cost while uses the other 50 to support other activities against an interest rate at 1% over a period of 25 years
What are the main currencies in use and why?The main currency in use is the BZD only as Belize government does not allow its nationals to hold any USD accounts, a government approach to support the BZD currency. This way, a Belize national has to compulsorily use the BZD. To the extent that travellers are made to declare if they carry more than 5000 USD as a measure to control exchange.

In the nineteenth century, Belize, then known as British Honduras used the British monetary system, but Guatemala’s silver peso replaced the British currency after the 1873 silver crisis, which had negative repercussions for British Honduras’ currency value, so they decided to introduce the new dollar currency to increase their value and reach higher standards.
This brought the currency into line with Canada, who were at the gold standard (1 Canadian Dollar was equal to 1 US Dollar). The gold standard was abandoned by the United Kingdom in 1931, when British Honduras decided that their currency would remain attached to the dollar, rather than becoming part of the sterling bloc.
