The Tajikistani somoni subdivides into 100 diram, and is named in honour of the Tajik nation’s father, Ismail Samani.
The somoni replaced the Tajikistani ruble at a ratio of 1 somoni: 1000 rubles, in 2000. Coins were introduced in 2001, with the intention of replacing the diram notes that circulated before, though both coins and noted in denominations of diram are currently in circulation.
Coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 diram, as well as 1, 3 and 5 somoni. Banknotes circulate in denominations of 1, 5, 20 and 50 diram, and 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 100, 200 and 50 somoni.
